This is a non-credit language course for aspiring professionals with limited, or no, work experience. The course is designed to help improve your ability to communicate effectively with business people and professionals in English.
Your learning will focus on oral forms of communication, vocabulary and idioms, and the standards of behavior of North American business. You will explore some of the important cultural differences that need to be bridged in order to participate successfully in today's global economy. Occasional guest speakers will contribute their specific expertise and provide a listening challenge.
This course integrates: •listening •talking •reading •some writing You will practice a variety of skills and strategies aimed at improving your fluency, accuracy, and ability to choose the appropriate tone and formality level for the situation.
Specific business topics* may include: •marketing •finance •investing in the stock market •economics •entrepreneurship •management •corporate ethics •organizational structure.
Assignments are an important part of the course. They may include: tape-recording yourself; reading articles; writing summaries; interviewing people; researching topics of interest, etc. You will also have several group assignments that will require you to meet with classmates outside of class; their purpose is to help you practice some of the critical skills you need to work successfully as a member of a team.
Note: This is a language course. The purpose is to help you develop language skills for business, not to teach you business. The focus is language skills in a business context.
